Automation & remote control

Assign MIDI, control surface, Shuttle and gamepad controls

Use supported physical controls for production actions or changing values.

Before you start

Open the intended collection and layout. Make changes during preparation and check a short rehearsal before using them in a live show.

Where to find it

File > Shortcuts; choose the device in Input device.

Set it up

  1. Connect the controller and make sure it is available to the computer.
  2. Choose Add Shortcut and select MIDI, Control Surface, Shuttle Controller or Gamepad / Joystick.
  3. Operate the exact control you want to capture.
  4. Choose When pressed, When released, or Continuous value from the choices offered for that device.
  5. Choose a compatible command and set its target/value and saved scope.
  6. Choose Save Shortcut, then test the full control movement or button action.

Button versus continuous input

A button press/release triggers an action. A knob or fader’s Continuous value passes a changing value to a suitable command. Gamepad / Joystick assignments offer press/release; do not assume every axis is assignable in this editor.

Feedback is separate

A shortcut sends your input to MCast. Signals send application state back to supported feedback targets. A working shortcut does not automatically configure a light or display.

If input is not captured

Check connection, device selection and whether another application is holding the device. Capture the actual control rather than typing a guessed control identifier. Recheck targets after changing collections.
