Soften mask edges and choose inner or outer effects

Place soft edges, strokes, glows and shadows on the intended side of a shape.

Before you start

Open the intended collection and check the result before using the change during a production. Available controls depend on your installed version and selection.

Where to find it

Advanced Mask shape settings, or the Inner/Outer controls in the selected supported effect.

Use it

  1. Choose the mask type and shape before adjusting their dependent controls.
  2. For Shape Feather, choose None, Inner, Middle or Outer and set the amount.
  3. For a stroke/glow/shadow, choose its offered inner/outer position and compare the boundary.
  4. Check inversion, source-border handling and any offered padding/expansion against the final scene.

Helpful information

None or a zero feather amount keeps a hard boundary. Inner softens toward the inside of the shape; Middle centers the soft transition across its boundary; Outer extends it outside. Invert reverses which part is kept, so recheck the visible result after toggling it.

An inner effect follows the inside of the silhouette; an outer effect extends outward. Ignore Source Border, where offered, suppresses the inner effect along the original picture border. Padding/expansion can provide room for an outer effect; a later crop can still clip it. Use Edges: Current when the intended boundary is the cropped picture.

Filter properties show controls relevant to the selected mode. Hidden dependent values are retained and can return when that mode is selected again. A missing width, image or center control can be a mode choice rather than a lost setting. The Add Filter dialog recommends an advanced version when one is available; choose based on the controls your task needs.
